About Me

My name's Christopher and I'm a husband, a father, a nuclear engineer, a hobbyist woodworker, a fightin' Texas Aggie, a baseball fan (Go Stros!), a YouTuber (not whiskeytube, but for woodworking), an outdoor enthusiast, a collector of comics and baseball cards, and a fan of whiskey!

When I was in college, I started to appreciate whiskey when I first had Maker's Mark. There were always whiskey's that I wanted to try that were way out of my tax bracket as a full time college student, but I still explored the bottom shelves and there were a significant amount of value in bottom shelf bourbon. I then found my way onto the craft beer train. I credit my introduction to craft beer (and being a foodie in general) for being able to train my palate and pick out tasting notes. After about a decade largely away from bourbon, I returned to this spirit. This time around, I'm more interested in trying new whiskeys outside of the world of bourbon.

I've found that I really enjoy picking out tasting notes and finding the subtle differences between whiskeys. I like the science behind the flavors I get. Wood selection, maturation environment, mash bill, distillation practices, and many other variables all influence how a whiskey tastes, and I love learning about all the nuances. As an engineer, I enjoy analyzing the "why" behind what I'm picking up in my tasting notes.

I was originally only posting whiskey reviews on Reddit, but decided I should probably start documenting my reviews somewhere outside of Reddit so their longevity isn't reliant on the future of a Reddit alone. Enter: Woodgrain & Whiskey! The creation of Woodgrain & Whiskey is both a creative outlet as well as a way to document and catalog all the whiskeys I've reviewed. While I'll still post my reviews to Reddit, this site will provide an easy one stop shop for all my reviews.

My latest adventure in the world of whiskey is working towards my Master of Bourbon certification through the Council of Whiskey Masters. I have completed the level I course and have earned my Certified Bourbon Professional (CBP) certificate. I'm currently studying for the level II course to become a Certified Whiskey Specialist (CWS). I frequently share updates through my Instagram account about this process.

Whether you found Woodgrain & Whiskey because of a singular whiskey review, like using the Woodgrain & Whiskey Rickhouse, or are a general fan of my writing style and content, welcome! I appreciate everyone that visits my website and strive to continue providing value to each and every one of you with each review and article I write.
